10 Ways To Care For Your Soul

10 Ways To Care For Your Soul

Life can be draining, and the world is getting crazier by the second. The more we engage with it all, the more we'll need to care for our soul; the place that holds our identity, emotions, and will.

Whether you’re a busy mom who barely has time to comb her own hair or a working professional who wants nothing to do with civilization after working an 8 hour work day; your soul is in need of care, and I've got 10 things that can help you do it.

1. Yoga

Yoga has been proven to calm your mind and strengthen your inner voice. As you move into different positions, focusing on taking deep breaths, you release oxygen to your brain which calms all of the stress and anxiety from worry and responsibilities.

Here are three easy movements that will calm you even if you're trying yoga for the first time.

2. Journal

Journaling is a  way to release thoughts, feelings, and questions that need to be expressed and an invitation to share the things that are too intimidating to say out loud.

Open a journal and write whatever comes out. Don't think, don't wander; just write. You'll find clarity and healing in the release; which will give you all the space you need, to receive.

3. Meditate

Meditation isn't just about being quiet, it's about aligning ourselves in solitude. You can meditate in the morning or in the middle of the day when life is trying all of your nerves - it all depends on who you are and what you need.

Sit on the floor or the bed. Sit in the car or at the park; and close your eyes. Sit up straight, and focus on your breathing. Release every thought that comes to mind and breathe. It takes time to get the hang of it, but the more you try, the more you'll find peace in doing absolutely nothing.

4. Read

So many of us have forgotten how beneficial it is to just read a book for the sake of it. You can read “You are a Badass” or any other self help book because you want to genuinely improve yourself; and you can also read a story simply because simply because you want to.

Read a book that distracts you from life for a second. OR read something that makes you cry. Or makes you smile. Read something about a young wizard that goes to a weird school and gets into trouble. It doesn't matter what you read, as long as you read something that feeds the soul.

5. Let go

This one is really simply yet so hard to do at times. Letting go of the past often feels as if we're letting go of ourselves. We have a strange habit of gifting the past with the present, which can be a recipe for disaster.

Write the past a letter. Give away old things. Delete useless numbers. Leave that terrible relationship.  It's hard to make room for new people, experiences, and realities if you're constantly holding onto the old. DO your soul a favor and let. It. the fuck. Go.

6. Tell the truth, out loud.

You may know what it’s like to be stuck - writer's block, artists block, life block; it happens to the best of us. Releasing fears and secrets presents the opportunity to eliminate the things that keep us from moving forward.

While therapy can be scary and hard to find, confiding in someone you trust is simply necessary. Do yourself a favor, find someone you love, someone you trust, or a random stranger and tell the damn truth so you can move on.

7. Join a community

There are a ton of communities in the world. Bike riding clubs. Chess clubs. Twerk classes. Whatever your preference, community is a necessity for human survival.  We ALL need a place to feel something, give something or simply be in a space that feels authentic.

Find a church. Join a movement. Start a collective around something you love. And if all else fails, think about the type of people you want to be around and eliminate (or distance yourself) from those who don't match the description.

8. Visit family

Family can be the most annoying yet most satisfying part of life. True family, whether born into or self created, can restore you back to life, no matter the circumstance.

Visit your favorite relative. Or call your mother. Facetime the cousin you used to get into trouble with, or send a message to someone you miss. If you'd rather not see the people who raised you, find people who love you the way you need to be loved, and call them family. It doesn't matter who they are, as long as they are love.

9. Color something!

Coloring books have been around for years. Since like… 1791 or something. Most of associate coloring books with our youth but they are just as effective now as they were years ago. They give you calm. They give you solace. They give you an opportunity to be creative without having to think too hard about anything.

You can be free when you color. You can veg out to music or your favorite TV show and just be. If nothing else, you'll love yourself a little more because you gave yourself one of the greatest gifts of all - to be a kid again.

10. Do something that makes you REALLY REALLY happy.

If none of the above things are your thing, that’s fine. We are all different thus we all need to do different things. I am a dancer - in my home. I will dance in the mirror for hours because it just brings me so much joy. I smile and laugh at myself and I am free.

What makes you really happy? A candy bar? Go get one. A certain television show? Go watch it. Singing off key in the mirror with a brush? Get to it. Baking cookies, lemme get one. Do the things that bring you joy, and you will do the things that set your soul free.
