7 Life Lessons From The Heroes of Sing

Some say, art is simply an imitation of reality - be it a painting of a nature scene or the story of a young girl finding her way home on a road paved with gold.

Whether we watch movies for the entertainment or for the opportunity to see ourselves depicted on screen, there is no doubt that an intersection lives at the heart of human experience and artistic expression.

We often find true, valuable life lessons weaved throughout some of the best stories ever told. In this piece, we’ll examine some of the lessons learned through the lives of the characters in the movies Sing, Trolls and Moana.

Because who better to show us ourselves than animals who know good music, the happiest beings in the world, and a beautiful young island warrior?

1. DO WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART WELL

In each of these movies, many of the main characters were faced with the challenge of following their heart even when it went against the desires of those closest to them.

In the movie Sing,Johnny is a young man born into a family of gangsters. His father is determined to teach him the ropes of bank robbery and getaway driving but Johnny’s heart is set on singing and daydreaming of a life completely different than the life his father wants for him.

Johnny attempts to balance both of these very different dreams which results in misfortune for both him and his father. His fathers disappointment causes a riff between them and threatens to sever their relationship forever.

In the end, Johnny's decision to follow his heart makes everything right between him and his father and Johnny is able to live the life he’s been dreaming of for so long. Making the tough decisions isn’t always about taking the easy road, sometimes; it’s about doing what makes your heart well no matter the consequences.

2. USE WHAT YOU HAVE

We are a people who are always in want, all the time. We want new, amazing things and we want them now. But what do you do when you need something, and you have no way of getting it?

In the movie Sing, Buster Moon is a theater owner who faces this very dilemma and must use what he has to fulfill his vision of being the greatest showman in history.

Until now, Buster Moon has had a track record of having terrible, undersold shows in his theater. That bad streak would soon come to an end when he decides to host a singing competition.

His dreams are shattered when tragedy strikes his theater and he finds himself without a venue. Buster temporarily gives up on his dreams until he hears the singing voice of his stage hand, Mina.

Inspired by her voice, Buster picks himself up and decides to rebuild his theater and live out his dream. He didn’t have any money, but he used the pieces he did have, and those
willing to help to rebuild his theater and put on a life changing show. You may not always have what you need, but if you partner with creativity, you can use what you have to create the reality you desire.

3. DO IT AFRAID

How many times have we found ourselves with great desire to share our gifts yet we hold back due to relentless, heart gripping fear?

Such is the case for the character Mina in Sing (yes, the same Mina that inspiredBuster to rebuild his theater). Mina’s family constantly raves of her brilliant singing voice yet she is too afraid to share her talents in front of a crowd. She is pressured by her family to audition for Busters singing competition but fear gets the best of her and she ends up walking home unsatisfied with her performance.

One day, Buster finally hears Mina sing and is blown away by her talent. He takes her under his wing, determined for others to hear her beautiful voice.

Through the help of her new mentor, Buster Moon, Mina realizes that her courage comes when she’s standing face to face with her biggest fear. The moment she opens her mouth and
begins to sing, she is no longer afraid - and she kills her performance.

4. GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE GOT

When you're so used to holding things in, the opportunity to let it all out can seem daunting for some. Such is the case for Rosita. The mom in Sing with 26 kids, a husband who lives in his own world and a dream to do something more than clean house and cook breakfast.

IT was a long road for Rosita in this film when she decided to try out for Busters talent competition. After several tries and attempts to get the steps right, Rosita found herself mourning the loss of her rhythm and pride.

And then it happened. The music took over her and when she least expected it, she let go and went full force into the sexy dancer she had been looking for all along - and all she had to do was let go and give it all she had.

5. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHINE
